Mentorship Pairing Guide for Transitioning Producers
Use this guide to determine if a mentorship match is the right fit for you.
Once you are matched with a mentor:
1.

The mentor will reach out to you to schedule a phone call.

2. During and after the phone call, determine if the match is right for you.
3. Email your mentorship program staff with your decision on whether you
would like to continue with the match.

Questions to ask the mentor during the phone call:

What has been the mentor’s experience with organic production and
certification?
What types of production can the mentor provide guidance on?
What part of certification can the mentor provide guidance on?
What crops and/or livestock does the mentor produce?
What is the size of the mentor’s operation (and any other details about the
operation)?
Why has the mentor signed up to provide mentorship?
What are some things the mentor likes to do in their free time?

Questions to ask yourself after the phone call:

Will this mentor be able to provide guidance in the areas I am looking for?
Do I feel confident this mentor can meet me where I am?
Will their mentoring style be supportive for me?
Do I think I will be able to build rapport with this person?
Will I be able to respect this person’s views and opinions?
How do I feel after talking with this person?

Once you have made your decision on whether you would like to continue
with this mentorship match, email or call your mentorship program staff
with your decision.
